“Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children…” (Ephesians 5:1, KJV)
When I read this verse this week, I realized that it was telling us in what manner we are to follow God: like beloved children.
Not like mistreated slaves dragged along behind Him on a chain, not like desperate beggars unsure of their reception, not like Spartan soldiers trying to deny any need and give every ounce, not like curious thrill-seekers looking for the next newsworthy experience, not like motivated achievers seeking to enhance their portfolios or their resumes.
Like children. Children, sons and daughters, that are dear – that are greatly beloved by their father, and know that it is so. Those children run after their daddy, eager to follow him. They know that they are wanted and welcome, and they trust him to meet their needs. They often just want to be with him, because he loves them and he is good. And they want to find out what he’s doing and join him in it, learning from and imitating him.
That’s how God, our Father, wants us to follow Him – in a loving relationship!
